DRS 10.0 installation issues

$

Two issues - I had DRS installed on my Windows 7 Pro workstation, but was experiencing some unexplained weirdness, so thought that I'd remove and reinstall just to rule that out.  I can't get it reinstalled - keep getting the message   "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package.  A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor.".

So far, I've tried:

  • Re-downloading the zipped installation files
  • Installing to a different directory
  • Rebooting
  • Removing the \Program Data\Solarwinds files
  • repairing my .net installation

I've also tried installing on a difference Windows 7 Pro machine, and on this computer, the installation starts but just hangs.  I can see two DRS10... processes running in task manager, but they never do anything.

Not sure what to try next.

Ideas?

How do I generate a csr for an SSL certificate for an already installed Dameware Central Server?

$

I took over configuring Dameware 11 and configuring the Internet Proxy (and later the Mobile Gateway) from another admin. He had installed the components on a server which was already running IIS. I can't tell whether it installed web components within IIS or is using another web service. So that would be my first question. How do I confirm whether it is using the default website within IIS? I had setup a second IP on the server to be used only by Dameware so there would be no conflict on ports 80/443 with any previous services using IIS on the server. Now I need to make sure Dameware is only using that IP (I believe I've accomplished that in the settings), and I need to generate a CSR so I can get and install an SSL certificate for Dameware.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Problem with licensing updates

$

Last year when we renewed our licenses we upgraded from ver 9 to version 11.  I put together a Centralized server which everyone now logs into to use DameWare.  However, when I tried to enter the keys into the License Activation program it wouldn't accept them and I had to open a service request to get it resolved so we could use DameWare.  Earlier this year I expanded my license count, and again, when I tried to update using the License Activation program it wouldn't accept the keys so I had to open another service request.

I just upgraded to the new Version 11.2 and renewed my licensing again for another year.  However, it is not reflecting in either the Server Admin Console or the Activation program.  Both still show the license is only valid through the middle of next week and the Admin Console comes up w/ warnings that there is only 7 days left.  When I click the "I Already Paid" button in the warning it just opens the web page for me to sign into.  I found the License Manager out there and downloaded it.  I ran the sync on that and it comes back fine, shows that I'm good through next year.  Still not updating in the Admin console.  I can enter the keys from my info on the customer portal in the Activation program and at least it shows that it takes them - used to always fail.  However, the dates are still showing that my licensing is about to expire.

What am I missing?!!  Why isn't it updating the date info for me so I'm not seeing the errors in the Admin console any longer?!

How to: Use DameWare Exporter to survey the software in your network computers

Hello DameWare users!

Here is a brief guide to shows how to gather information from computers in your network or domain using the DameWare Exporter tool included with DameWare Remote Support.

Objectives:

1- Get "Installed Software" data from computers in my network to create a report.

2- Get the information in a CSV file format so it can be easily imported into an Excel spreadsheet

3- Get the information from several computers in a single file

First, you have to launch the tool. You can find it in the same location as the main DameWare Remote Support application (Start > Programs > SolarWinds > DameWare Remote Support 9.0 > DameWare Exporter). You can recognize it easily by the colors in the icon (blue/yellow) :

exporter icon.JPG

In the Exporter tool you must change the settings so the files created have the CSV format instead of XML (which is used by default). In this example we want to get "Standard" information (which basically means we are pulling data from the machine instead of Active Directory) so that's the tab we need to modify:

expopt.JPG

NOTE: The "Single File" option here indicates that a single file will be made per-machine including all properties selected. It DOES NOT mean a single file will include each computer.

Once the output file type is set, do the following:

1- Under "Task List" uncheck everything except for Standard Properties - Software.

2- Click the "Add Machines" button to include the computers you want to survey.

3- Make sure all the systems in the "Computer List" are checked

4 - Click on "Start Exporting"

DWEXP - Software survey.JPG

After this you will end up with a .csv file for each computer you surveyed. Unfortunately, DameWare Exporter doesn't feature an option to generate a single file for all the computers. However,  CSV files are easily merged using the Windows copy command. Place all the files in the same folder and run the following command in the Command Prompt:

copy *.csv allcomputers.csv

This line will create a new file, "allcomputers.csv" (you may use the name of your choice) that will be a merging of all .csv files found in that folder.

Automate DameWare Development Mirror Driver removal

When our IT remotes to our Windows PCs they leave behind the DameWare Development Mirror Driver. This driver causes problems with at least one software application, and so it needs to be removed after the remote IT session is ended. How can this be automated?

Air Force issues with Dameware

We use Dameware all throughout the Air Force and we will be going to mandated PIV's where we have to use our CAC cards with our administrative accounts, which will prevent us from using Dameware. Is there a work around for this, or will there be a solution for this issue? If there isn't, we will no longer be able to use Dameware and the Air Force will not purchase any more licenses.

Firewall Considerations

Install Damweware 12 and need very specific firewall configurations that are described vaguely in the documentation.

If a technician is on network 10.0.0.0/16 ( default internet connection 10.0.0.1/16) connecting thru/to a FIREWALL Central server 192.168.1.x/24 and Proxy 192.168.1.x/24 to a firewall/DMZ/NAT to internet to Home router and one of 3 remote machines with agent does the technician connection path stay in the Central server path to connect and hand-off to the technician internet path? Which path will it take? Path 1 or Path 2 and are my defined ports all that are needed to be opened?

We are still using the DameWare RS 9.0V where I work and I had to reload DameWare on to my system the other day.  When I loaded DMRS onto my system I received a "SolarWinds.MRC.Licensor has stoppped working" error.   When I click on the "Close the program", the entire program closes.  What is the fix for this error?

Thank you

Dameware 11.2 - Authentication

$

We are currently testing deployment of Dameware Mini Remote Control to the client systems.

With the previous version (11.1), we were able to add a new line to the registry location [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\DameWare Development\Mini Remote Control Service\Settings]

"UseCurrentLogonCredentials"=dword:00000001

This would automatically select 'Windows NT Challenge/Response' and check the 'Use Current Logon Credentials'

This is not seems to be the case with the new version 11.2. When I add the link, nothing seems to happen.

Can anyone suggest solution?

Thanks.

Dameware Remote Support / MRC Central SLOW

When we connect to clients using RS and MRC (both internal and over the internet) the lag is extremely slow.  We recently upgraded to 11.2 and started using centralized versus standalone.  Since the upgrade, we are almost non-functional.  We never had this issue until the upgrade / change to central.

Environment:

15 locations all connected via VPN.  Connection speeds range from 10 - 100Mb per second.  Connections that are on the same LAN as the technician is slow.

Please help.

Thank you,

Shane

Does anyone have any additional info on what Dameware provides?

Dameware RS - Internet connections

We currently use the Dameware Mini Remote control utility to support our end users on the network (or at least VPN). We'd like to be able to use the Remote Support feature to do internet sessions but can't figure out how to do so.

Does the remote support client need installed on a server or can you do internet sessions from a standalone client ? We don't have a server install at all currently for this as it is just 2 techs currently that use it.

I have a license for Remote Support but the internet option is greyed out. We are currently using version 11.

I don't have current maintenance and haven't looked into the renewal since we are entertaining other products as well currently. I've attached a screenshot of what I am currently seeing in the miniRC screen if that helps.

Please note we have released Hotfix 1 for Dameware version 12.0. This hotfix is available on your customer portal.

Hotfix 1 addresses the following issues:

  • ZDI-CAN-3125 vulnerability (Thanks to Andrea Micalizzi aka rgod, working with HP's Zero Day Initiative, for identifying this issue.)
  • Upgrading MRC agents on remote machine failed.
  • MRC was not able to connect to remote machine using "MRC Ping" feature.
  • DRS Service installation failed in DRS.
  • Event log does not show content in DRS.

Hotfix 1 requires SolarWinds DameWare Mini Remote Control version 12.0.0.509. Hotfix 1 can be applied to both 32-bit and 64-bit installations or SolarWinds DameWare Remote Support version 12.0.0.509.

And Now... How to Import ?
by shamantao on Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:51 am

Hi
Exporter works fine   , I can export my AD users well.
( except when I choose Standard Properties that hang all the time but it is not usefull )
But now how can I import the xml file in an test environment (like vm) to another AD ??
What tools do i need ?

Hi shamantao,

Thank you for your kind comments.

However the Exporter is only designed to retrieve data from remote machines, so you canimport this data into your favorite third-party reporting tool (i.e. Crystal Reports, Excel, etc..) for addition reporting, filtering, or summary options.

Unfortunately, there is no functionality within our software to import this data into another machine/domain.

Thanks for your answer.
Well maybe it will be a good idea to implement Import to your soft, because i didn't find any other tool that do it fine. And I think it will be cool in DameWare Utilities to have this option.

Hi

I agree with the previous reply. Please consider incorporating the XML schema to NT Utilities tobe able to read the reports from Explorer easier.

Hello Fodde,

Thanks for your feedback. However, I believe the original poster was speaking about transferring information from one Domain Controller to another, or one machine to another, via the Exporter. In other words, extracting the information from one machine and then importing it on another machine.

With regard to reporting on the XML files created by the Exporter, you should be able to read or report on this information using any other third-party reporting tool (Crystal Reports, Excel, etc..). Or perhaps set the output type to CSV instead of XML, which can also be read by Excel as well.

Okay,

So what you are triing to say is that it is not possible to export from Dameware and import it on an AD installation on an other domain.

What if i have to move the server and re-installing it with AD instead of Dameware. How can i get the users from Dameware into AD without any handshake or connection between the servers.

Thanks

Hi Willio,

This specific topic is in reference to the Exporter, and the Exporter simply retrieves information from remote machines, so that you can pass this information off to any third-party reporting tool.

If you want to attempt to import this information (into AD) on another machine, you would haveto use some other third-party tool to accomplish this task. Our software does not have the ability to import information (contained in TXT, CSV, XML, etc.) into AD.

I hope this helps.

Hi Willio,

There is no importing into the DameWare Exporter. Both the Exporter and DNTU dynamically retrieve information from remote machines.

The only things to potentially import into DNTU would be your list of Favorite machines, or your AD Site List.

Hope this helps.

Logged in Users to the machine

$

Hello everybody,

we are running the actual version of DameWare 11.1.0.170 for our Administrators to have some smooth remote support ability.

There is only one problem/missed function, we want to have.

We want to see which user is logged into a machine, when we are checking our "Active Computer list" in DameWare.

Also I know this can be done via the Active Directory (add to the description field on the computer), but then we have some double maintenance.

Is there any functionality on DameWare to check which user is logged into. For example is DameWare able to readout the "User and Groups" of Windows or the registry to check whether which user has logged in today?

Thanks for any answer.

Hopefully you can help me.

Best Regards,

Philipp
